"Vampire Hunter"
I followed their horses' tracks out of Dargon. They weren't going to get away. They weren't going to feed on the girl. Hell, I might even stop their unnatural activities forever. Abruptly the tracks turned off the path. I followed them into the woods. They came to a stream and went alongside it for a while till the stream joined a river near a waterfall. There the tracks stopped. I searched around for a while more. Then I found something. It was a cave behind the waterfall. Sure enough, there were faint traces of hoofprints in the dust there.
I tied my donkey, Igor, to a nearby tree. Then, armed with my state-of-the-art, wooden stake shooting rifle, I entered the cave. Stealthily as a cat (or at least more gracefully than an elephant) I walked down its dark corridor. My eyes soon adjusted to the dim light provided by my torch.
I could take on anything. When I was through, there wouldn't be a vampire within miles. I continued downward, occasionally twisting right or left. I noted each turn but didn't write anything down. There was no need. I had a photographic memory. I knew my way back fine. Suddenly, I heard a flutter. I spun around, ready to beat the shit out of any vampire bats that might appear. There was nothing there. I strained my eyes, trying to see into the dancing shadows provided by the torchlight. Sharp, stabbing pain erupted in my head. I fell to the ground. I rolled over and looked up. Through my blurred vision I made out a humanoid figure. It bent closer to me, coming into focus as it did so. I could now see its pale skin and dark, soulless eyes. I mustered what strength I could to scream. It opened its mouth, exposing its pearly white fangs.
I woke up. I must've fainted earlier. I staggered to my feet and stood, swaying slightly. Where was the vampire? I reached for my gun. It was gone! Oh shit. Where the hell is it? I scrambled around looking for the rifle. It was no use. I couldn't find my state-of-the-art, wooden stake shooting vampire rifle. The vampire must have taken it. What if the vampire is still around? There was a cold knot in my stomach. Oh shit. Ok, ok. I've gotta calm down. Now how did I come to get in here? I walked back the way I came, trying hard to fight my rising sense of panic. I must remain calm. I have to concentrate on the way out. I must stay calm.
I probably walked back the way I came for ten minutes before I noticed something strange. I could see. Even though I didn't have my torch anymore, I could see. My eyes must've adjusted to the darkness.
Eventually I got out of the cave. It was still dark outside. Igor stood grazing next to the tree he was tied to. When he saw me he shied away, eyes wide with fear. I walked towards him slowly, making soft crooning sounds to soothe him. Igor just got more frantic. God, I am hungry. You'd think I hadn't eaten for days. I noticed Igor more than ever now. I saw the poor donkey's pulse beneath his skin, saw it as a hot pink flashing in my mind. I bet Igor's blood would taste pretty good. I could knock him unconscious first so he wouldn't struggle. Oh my god, what am I thinking? Quickly, I drew my dagger and cut the rope that held Igor.
"Get the hell out of here!" I screamed at the poor beast.
Igor needed no encouragement. The donkey took off, running faster than any ass ever ran before. I watched him run off. I'm a monster. I was about to drink poor Igor's blood. He has carried all my junk faithfully for all these years, and I was going to drink his blood.
How did this all happen? I'm a vampire now. I didn't know how. I had always thought you had to share blood with a vampire to become one. Still, who knew what happened when I was unconscious. Maybe I did share blood with the vampire. Maybe the myths were wrong, and I became a vampire some other way. It didn't matter. I'm a monster now. What if my taste for blood leads me to capture children the way this vampire did? I can't allow that to happen. The horizon was lighter now. I could go back into the cave. But I won't. I'll see if the myths are true. I'll see if I die when the sunlight strikes me.
So I sat down and waited for the sun to rise.
